SCAM WARNING WITH ADVICE FROM BBB

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Scam reports are up, prompting officials to remind residents to be wary of common scams.

First, there’s the “Grandparent Scam” – the caller will tell a person their child or grandchild is in jail and demand money be wired or sent to an address to get their loved one out of jail.

The second big scam right now is an IRS scam – the caller claims to be with the IRS, saying you owe money and must purchase iTunes gift cards or send cash for the owed amount.

The Chattanooga Better Business Bureau is familiar with both scams In fact more than $300 million has been lost to the IRS Scam in the last 3 years.

Chattanooga Better Business Bureau President Jim Winsett has advice for consumers: “First of all, realize that the IRS will never telephone you if there is an issue of any kind. So if someone says ‘This is the IRS’, immediately just hang up the phone. Don’t be worried about being polite, or inconsiderate, simply hang up the telephone.”

Also, the Chattanooga Police Department says that to avoid being victimized, resist the pressure to act quickly, contact your family to determine the legitimacy of the call, and never wire money based on a phone call or email.

If you receive a call from a scamer, report it to the BBB using their website.
